Arise, Shine! Your Light Has Come!

Ten Steps to Freedom from Depression

I was in my early thirties and my body was deteriorating. After having endured a fifteen year battle with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, weight gain, headaches, a sleep disorder, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, five ruptured discs and spinal nerve damage, it finally hit me. I was spiritually, mentally, physically, financially and relationally bankrupt.

My doctors concurred that stress was the cause and that I was depressed. The stress in my life was from unmet goals, unfulfilled expectations and disappointment. There was stress from my job; stress in my marriage and stress in my finances. There was also stress from un-forgiveness, guilt and condemnation. And then there was added stress from the pain in my body that the stress had caused.

Every time I felt pain, the thoughts of hopelessness, sadness and misery would take over until it ultimately put a strain on my mind, my thoughts, my confidence and even my faith. I found myself meditating on the worst things that could possibly happen to me, until God taught me a valuable lesson.

I learned that depression was the result of an unrestrained thought life. It’s a form of torment and a stronghold created by prolonged negative meditation.  You see our thoughts shape our conversations, our imagination, our actions and our outcomes. Our thoughts truly do rule our lives and we will have what we say.

Perhaps that is why God so adamantly instructs us on how to “think”. He tells us repeatedly to think like Christ thinks. He reminds us to focus on those things that are good, lovely and of good report; and to meditate on His promises.

So, in the spirit of spring cleaning, it’s time to clean out your thought life. OUT with the old thoughts of disappointment, inadequacy, sadness, fear and shame, etc., and IN with the new thoughts that line up with what God really says about you.

God doesn’t just accept you, He prefers you! He called you, chose you, perfected you and equipped you. You are not only worthy of the promises of God, but He made those promises specifically for you alone.

It’s time for us all to renew our minds, take ownership of the promises of God and live free from depression, once and for all.

Arise & Shine! Your Light Has Come! Here are YOUR 10 Steps to ABSOLUTLEY Overcome… Click To Tweet

ARISE [from the depression and prostration in which circumstances have kept you–rise to a new life]! Shine (be radiant with the glory of the Lord), for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you! (Is 60:1 – Amplified)

It’s not going to be easy, especially since you have conditioned yourself to focus on the lack, the loss and the sadness that you “see” on a daily basis.

But be patient and compassionate with yourself. Remember that with God all things are possible. God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness and it is sufficient for you. All you need to do is accept the grace to overcome the emotional torment by resisting the devil and he will flee.

Step 1: Begin to Pay Close Attention To Your Thoughts

This may shock you at first. But just begin to notice your thoughts. Notice how often you are bombarded with fear-based worry and concerns. Be mindful of how your imagination kicks in and pre-plays scenarios of your worst fears.

Yes, this is a full-on assault by the adversary. This is how he builds and sustains the stronghold called depression. But fear not. Today you are set free. We have found the thief!

Keep and guard your heart [mind, thinking and understanding] with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the issues and springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23 Amplified + concordance)

Step 2: Face your negative thoughts head on – without fear!

Examine each negative thought for what it is at its core. Put your negative thoughts on paper by creating a list with two columns.

Your Negative Thoughts

1)      I’ll never be financially secure.

2)      I’ll never be healed.

3)      I’ll always be dissatisfied and disappointed.

Step 3: Cast Down Every Negative Thought.

Know that you cannot cast down a thought with another thought. You cast down thoughts with words that you speak out loud.

In 2 Corinthians 10:5, the Bible tells us to take down, refute and destroy every thought or imagination that tries to stand against the promises of God.

Get the Word of God on each particular thought. The Bible is filled with promises that contradict your negative thoughts. Seek them out and you will find them. Use online Bible tools to help you with your search. (BibleGateway.com and BlueLetterBible.com are great resources.)

Your negative thoughts                                       The Word/Bible on it

1)  I’ll never be financially secure.                             1) Isaiah 48:17  & Phil 4:19

2)  I’ll never be healed.                                             2) Isaiah 53:5 & Mark 5:34

3)  I’ll always be dissatisfied & disappointed.            3) Psalm 138:8 & Psalm 37:4

Step 4: Know what to say and when to say it.

Speak the Words of God every time a negative thought comes into your mind. Turn it into a confession. Make it personal, in the present tense and speak it often. Write your confessions on index cards and carry them in your purse.

Your New Confessions: Your New Thoughts.

1) The Lord is teaching me to profit and He’s leading me in the way that I should go.  And He liberally supplies my every need completely.

2) Christ was wounded, bruised and chastised so I don’t have to be. By his wounds I was healed. My faith, trust and absolute confidence in God, has restored me to health. I am at peace knowing that I am continually healed and freed from every disease.

3) The Lord is perfecting those things that concern me and he always gives me the desires and secret petitions of my heart.

Step 5: Know what to think about.

In Philippians 4:8, God tells us plainly that we are to think about what’s true, not the lies that Satan feeds us. We are to think about what’s right, what’s pure and what’s lovely. We should meditate on good news and the honorable things that bring us joy. We are to train ourselves to think about those things and not the fear based thoughts of despair that Satan uses to trap our minds. So think on those things.

Step 6: Cast Your Cares on God.

Know your part and be clear about God’s part. In 1 Peter 5:7, He tells us to cast our cares on him. So do it.

Add this to your confession.  “That’s yours Lord, I can’t worry about that!”  Then let it go.

Step 7: Stop speaking about your problems, stop replaying them in your mind.

Whether you realize it or not, when you speak about your problems you are meditating on them. Doing so will set your mind on the opposite of what God promised. Don’t be double minded. Make the decision today to trust God and His process. Stick to your decision by only saying what you want to see! Remember, you are more powerful than you realize. You have a choice and you will have what you say!

Step 8: Stop mindlessly validating what your senses and emotions perceive.

Remember satan will use whatever is available to cast doubt on God’s word, God’s promises, God’s power and God’s plan. Resist doubt and satan will Flee.

How?  In the very moment the thought arises that contradicts the promise that you are standing on, say this out loud,

“I believe God, I believe his promise that ____ will/not happen. I plead the blood of Jesus over it and it is all going to be OK!”

Memorize this and use it as a weapon to overthrow those negative thoughts every time!

Step 9: Stop expecting the worst reaction, response and outcome in all situations.

The insidious thing about depression is that it creates a habit of belief that goes against the Word of God. Begin to trust that your “first thought”, (which is most often a “fear thought”) is a lie…at least until you build your new habit of trusting and believing God.

Step 10: Stop the blame game.

Remember that you are not wrestling with flesh and blood. Fight the right enemy! A wise man once said, “Never put a face on adversity! Man is not your problem.” We must have compassion for our fellow man/woman and know that our real enemy is the adversary!

So arise, shine and be the threat you were created to be! Let the power of God kick in and flow freely through you.  After all, greater is He that is in you and you are well able!

With Grace,
